This paper describes the methodology for selecting an optimal configuration of photovoltaic modules in an urban environment, taking into account the shading caused by obstacles surrounding the site, a common scenario in distributed generation. The installation consists of approximately 10 kWp on a flat roof of a snack bar in Villa Lobos Park in Sao Paulo. The PVSyst V6.38 software quantifies the losses of the system due to shading effect. The analysis of twelve proposals of module layouts showed how these layouts affects the array yield. The best three layouts were chosen to make further studies. Subsequently the calculation of the return on investment for these layouts indicated an 11 years payback time in the worst case, even affected by surrounding obstacles.
