Popis: In this study, we examined the functions of asymmetrical human finger phalanxes that have not been elucidated in morphology by using an engineering approach, and focused specifically on the stability of precision object grasping. For this purpose, we proposed a method to evaluate the grasping ability of artificial fingers and developed artificial fingers using alternative materials that substitute the actual human fingers. After comparing the performance of different types of the distal phalanx, the asymmetric type was found to be superior in terms of contact area, maximum drawing force, holding time, and work of friction than the symmetric type. These results suggest that the human distal phalanx morphology functions favorably for grasping objects.
