Laws governing separation by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of block copolymers of type AB, consisting of polystyrene (PS) and poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) blocks were studied. It has been shown that when TLC is carried out in conditions critical for the latter blocks (CTLC), the block copolymers are separated by the mechanism of size-exclusion chromatography (SETLC) according to the size of the PS block, while the PBMA blocks are chromatographically “invisible”. Conditions of CTLC for the PS blocks have been found, where the copolymers are separated by the SETLC mechanism according to the size of the PBMA blocks and the PS blocks are chromatographically invisible. The molecular mass of the block copolymers was evaluated from the data of SETLC, while the molecular mass of the PS and PBMA blocks were determined by using the chromatographic modes CTLC(PBMA)-SETLC(PS) and CTLC(PS)-SETLC(PBMA), respectively. The calculated composition of the block copolymers was found to agree well with those calculated from the kinetics of copolymerization and determined by microcolumn size-exclusion chromatography. |
