Depression is common both in persons from the general and in persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). In the general population, there is a growing appreciation that elderly individuals experience and manifest depressive symptomatology in a different way to their younger counterparts. Our understanding of depression in ageing adults with IDD is incomplete. This chapter gives an overview of what is known about the epidemiology, aetiology, presentation, suicide risk, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of depression, with a particular focus on research findings relating to the older IDD population. Throughout the chapter, possible areas that could be considered in future research are highlighted. |
