Popis: | Reovirus type 1 has been examined early in its replication cycle by means of ultrathin sectioning and the negative contrast technique. Crude preparations of infected tissue culture cells were frozen and thawed, stained with phosphotungstic acid, and examined in the electron microscope. In immature virus particles there is evidence that maturation may be achieved by arranging long protein strands to form the outer viral capsid. A discrete inner shell of viral protein is also observed. Simultaneous examination of ultrathin sections through cells infected with reovirus indicates that viral aggregates arise in the cytoplasm contiguous to but separate from vesicular components. |
