Popis: The presented investigations were aimed at determining basic wire EDM parameters, i.e. the wire cutting speed, the resultant surface roughness Ra, the width of the inter-electrode gap as dependent on the operating current pulse, the time of the operating pulse (pulse-on time) and the respective pulse break time (pulse-off time), the pulse activation time. Two kinds of material were used in the experiment: Aeral and the other duralumin for reference. The Aeral alloy features high 12 % copper content while standard copper content is 2-4.9%. Aeral belongs to a group of copper-based duralumin. It is used for manufacturing machine parts, vehicles, railway rolling stock, in the aeronautical industry and in civil engineering. Both materials have been subjected to sand-blast cleaning in order to remove the anodized superficial layer which would make the experiment not feasible. The experimental procedure was carried out on the FI 440 SLP wire electrical discharge machine. The samples were machined as fully immersed in the dielectric. Deionized water was applied as the dielectric. The 0.25 mm brass wire was used as a tool electrode. The aluminum type machining parameters were adopted for the wire cutting.
