Popis: Bundengan is a traditional musical instrument from Indonesia, which has clipped strings and long, thin bamboo plates as its sound generating elements. In the past, a bundengan would be played for the personal pleasure of its player. Nowadays, it is often performed on stage in front of a large audience. This change can be better accommodated if the acoustical characteristics of the instrument is understood. In this work, the directivity of sound radiation from two bundengans was measured and analyzed. It was found that the fundamental frequencies of the strings consistently showed higher sound pressure levels in the 0 and 180 degree angles. However, the directivity patterns for the overtone frequencies varied for each string. Mean-while, for one bundengan, the sound radiation from its three bamboo plates were stronger in the 0 and 270 degree angles, whereas for the other bundengan, the patterns varied for each of its bamboo plates. It is likely that the directivity of the fundamental frequencies can be similar between different bundengans because the basic shape and size of their half-dome structures are roughly the same. However, small variations in the details of their designs may contribute to differences in the directivity of the overtones.
