Popis: COVID-19 marks a historic challenge for the World Health Organization (WHO). International criticism of its cautious dealings with China’s lack of transparency pushed the UN Specialized Agency to the brink of a new political crisis. A ‘toothless’ mandate, however, leaves political appeasement as its only means of ensuring access of the international community to information from the epicenter of a possible pandemic. The lack of political will for reforms contrasts with the pivotal role of the UN agency as bridgehead between science and politics in preparing the world for infectious diseases and leading the fight against the pandemic.
