This chapter first reviews some of the core ideas related to gender and social roles that we find within early Confucianism, including the Book of Changes. By drawing on the writings about gender of three boundary-pushing Confucian thinkers including a Ming Dynasty Empress, the chapter then demonstrates that when the core ideas about gender are combined with other key Confucian commitments, it becomes clear that Confucians today should embrace an egalitarian conception of gender. This does not mean viewing everyone as simply the same, however; Confucian ideas help us to shape relationships and societies that honor both equality and difference. |
