In the Staatscourant, the Government Gazette published by the Dutch Government announcing new laws and other governmental matters, of Saturday, December 15, 1877, a Royal Decree of the day before was published under number 36, in which it was announced that ‘Dr. J. C. Kapteyn, now observator at the Sterrewacht of Leiden University, had been appointed professor in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the National University of Groningen’ (see Fig. 1.1). Just above that was Royal Decree number 35, in which it is announced that Kapteyn’s one and a half year older brother, mathematician Willem Kapteyn (1849–1927), teacher at a secondary school was appointed professor at the National University of Utrecht. |
