The permeation of biologically active substances through the skin is a process that determines the nourishing and therapeutic effect of cosmetic and medicinal products. Biologically active substances can permeate the skin in three stages: surface (adsorption), interdermal permeation and deep (resorption). The factors determining the speed of transdermal transport of the substance include: biological condition of the skin, physicochemical properties of biologically active substances, characteristics of substances accelerating absorption and the type of dermatological medium which was used. There are three ways of transdermal transport of cosmetic and medicinal substances: intercellular (transepidermal), transcellular (transdermal) and by skin appendages, such as hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sweat glands (transfollicular). Transdermal transport can be assisted using the following physical methods: phonophoresis, electroporation and iontophoresis. |
