An important part of any design process is analysis and problem definition, especially as so much of urban design is concerned with existing situations. However, the same method must also help us arrive at design solutions so it needs to be flexible and adaptable. Two such methods are investigated: the use of the grid and the urban armature. The design of cities has a long history and while a broad range of urban design techniques have been developed over the years many criteria have remained remarkably similar. This has led to the evolution of a number of long-established models for urban design which remain informative today. An example of such a model, which can accommodate both armature and fabric, is provided. Generally the spatial patterns of the city, the streets and the public spaces survive far longer than any particular building and the use of an individual building may change several times during the lifetime of the building. |
