A1. Background Life cycle analyses indicate that reusable menstrual products have a lower environmental impact than disposable single-use menstrual products. However, use of reusable menstrual products in the UK is relatively low, and knowledge about reusable menstrual products is likely a significant barrier to their uptake. Knowledge-based interventions to increase uptake of reusable menstrual products are therefore needed, to reduce the environmental impact of periods. A2. Objectives and Research questions The objective of the current research is to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of an infographic-based intervention designed to increase uptake of reusable menstrual products by increasing knowledge about where to purchase these products, how to use and clean them, and the environmental benefits of switching to reusable menstrual products. A3. Participants Participants will be people 18 years or older and currently living in the UK who menstruate and who have never used reusable menstrual products, recruited via online study adverts. A4. Study method Participants will complete 2 questionnaires, approximately 6 weeks apart. At Time 1, participants will be randomly allocated to view reusable menstrual products infographics, energy- and resource-saving products infographics, or no infographics, then report their intentions to purchase each type of product. At Time 2, participants will report their purchase/use of each type of reusable menstrual product. All participants will then be (re)shown the reusable menstrual product infographics, and asked to rate acceptability. |
