Popis: | Anemia is the decrease in healthy red blood cells. Iron deficiency anemia is a result of low iron levels in the body. It is also characterized by decreased ferritin, hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume, while total iron binding capacity and red blood cell distribution are increased. Hypochromic red blood cells may also be observed on a blood smear. Symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include fatigue, headaches, and pica. The etiology of this anemia can be a result of blood loss, inadequate iron intake, iron malabsorption, or increased demands of iron and treatment typically involves administration of oral ferrous iron. |
