Popis:	Parturition in the bitch is initiated by luteolysis which occurs in response to cortisol excreted by the pups in utero. A failure of luteolysis is associated with small litters. The case of a Bulldog bitch with a single pup pregnancy presented as failure to whelp on the expected date where the failure of luteolysis is documented is described. The importance of accurately predicting the whelping date to identify such conditions in the bitch is discussed.
