Popis: Animals have provided models in the field of research into platelet kinetics and atherosclerosis with various methods used to inflict endothelial damage on the arterial wall. Isolation of the carotid artery with standardised ischaemic time was advocated by Buchanan & Hirsch (3) and balloon catheter damage has been used in the rabbit aorta (5) and carotid artery (9). Constant infusion of homocystine has been shown to cause endothelial damage (6) as does dietary induced hyperchlorestolaemia (1). Carotid interposition vein grafting produces a reliable model producing intimal hyperplasia, but this resulted in a high operative mortality (8).
