New monitoring systems for lathes are necessary to reduce the possibilities of personnel injuries, damages to manufacturing equipment and non-productive times. Two reasons for accidents on lathes, caused by a loss of the gripping force, can often be observed: the centrifugal forces of the gripping jaws and an increase of the chuck friction caused by leakage of lubrication or pollution. For this problems new practical technologies have been developed. This paper describes firstly a measurement system to monitor the dynamic gripping force. The whole system is integrated in one jaw. The gripping force measurement can be realized by simply changing jaws. Secondly, the structure of a new computer based friction monitoring system for standard application is represented which initiates predictive maintenance for lathe chucks. |
