The design and implementation of the high speed imager (HSI) microchannel plate based imaging x-ray detector used for the calibration of the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) high resolution mirror assembly (HRMA) and objective transmission gratings (OTGs) is described. The similarities between the HSI and the AXAF high resolution camera (HRC) are discussed, as well as the modifications to the original HRC- like design needed to operate the detector at count rates up to approximately 2000 Hz used during the HRMA calibration. The imaging performance of the detector that is necessary to achieve the calibration error budget for the HRMA is discussed. Details of the actual performance of the HSI are provided in terms of key parameters such as spatial uniformity and linearity, imaging resolution, and counting rate limitations. The measurement techniques used to verify and calibrate the requisite detector performance are described.© (1997) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
