Popis: The use of composite materials in aircraft has been rapidly increasing. The high specific strength and stiffness of composites results in significant weight savings when these materials are substituted for aircraft alloys. The use in aircraft has been extensively reviewed [1–3]. Because the technology is relatively new, composites have only recently been introduced into structural applications. Advanced composite structure was first introduced on military aircraft when the reduced weight was desired for improved tactical performance. Commercial aircraft manufacturers are also beginning to use composites in structural applications where reduced structural weight leads to significant fuel savings. Many secondary structural components including flaps, fairings, and floor panels have been constructed from graphite and kevlar based composites. Figure 7.1 shows the use of composites in two recent aircraft [3, 4].
