The purpose of this paper is to record a study of the calcium and phosphorus metabolism of chickens suffering from the the paralytic condition commonly known as “Range Paralysis.” Much has been said, but little has been written concerning this condition in poultry flocks. As far as we can learn, there are three types of range paralysis: The first is a coccidial reflex type. Birds suffering from coccidial infection become unthrifty, weak and emaciated. The incidence of the infection is marked by a high mortality. When affected birds do recover, some of them develop a paralysis of the legs and following a short period of inactivity, succumb through lack of food. The second type of range paralysis is found in range birds which have been subjects of infestations by intestinal parasites. The third is a very confused type, sometimes spoken of as “slipped tendon,” sometimes as rickets and more generally . . . |
