Popis: | Objective: To determine acute and chronic effects of nitric oxide (NO) inhalational therapy on haemodynamics, oxygenation and outcome of patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Design: Computerised (Medline, Embase) as well as manual (Cumulated Index Medicus) literature search using the key words 'nitric oxide', 'acute lung injury' and 'ARDS'. Study selection: Only clinical studies published in indexed journals between January 1993 and April 1996 were included. Case reports, abstracts, reviews or editorials were excluded from evaluation. More than one publication from the same study group were included only when it was obvious that the results were derived from separate sets of patients. Data extraction: Relevant data were extracted in duplicate, followed by quality checks on approximately 80% of the data. For the evaluation of NO effects on haemodynamics and oxygenation, the maximum improvement in pulmonary artery pressure, maximum decrease in pulmonary vascular resistance and ma... |
