The serum levels of β-carotene were determined in patients with liver disease. β-Carotene levels in the patients with chronic hepatitis (CH) were comparable with the reported normal values. However, the levels decreased significantly in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Furthermore, the β-carotene levels of the HCC patients were significantly lower than those of the LC patients. The male patients had significantly lower levels of β-carotene than the female patients with CH and LC, but not with HCC. Possible contribution of the lower serum levels of β-carotene to the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma is discussed. |
