Hard, stable and anfractuous bottoms, in a marine environment of low sedimentation rate, in warm and well-oxygenated waters appear to have been required for egg-laying and for the embryonic development of Jurassic Nautilida. These conditions were found over the reliefs of the borders of ancient massifs, such as the Armorican Massif, and probably other submarine reliefs (horst, reefs, etc…). The stenotopic nature of the egg-laying places explains both the rarity of the early post-hatching fossil Nautilida in most deposits and the segregation between these very young individuals and the rest of the population. |
