Bryological knowledge of insular Newfoundland has been significantly augmented by an intensive investigation of the mosses and liverworts of Cataracts Provincial Park. The study area (13 ha) included forest, bog, heath, and a deep, narrow, and angular river gorge and waterfalls, which provide numerous microhabitats particularly suitable for bryophytes. The bryophyte habitats are described, and a list of species gives data on occurrence, frequency, and fertility. Within the study area 121 species of mosses and 63 species of liverworts were collected, which represent 35% of the known bryoflora of the island of Newfoundland. Bryum creberrimum, Cephaloziella hampeana, and Ditrichum lineare are additions to the bryoflora of insular Newfoundland. The ranges of several predominantly calciphilic bryophytes, previously thought to be more or less restricted in Newfoundland to the more calcareous western regions, have been extended to southeastern Newfoundland (Avalon Peninsula). A small southern element and a small northern element, represented by Sematophyllum marylandicum and Lophozia bantriensis, respectively, are present within the Park, but most of the bryophyte species there are typical circumboreal species. |
