Popis: This study aims to evaluate systemic comorbidities in patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The study included 90 patients who were admitted to the sleep laboratory to undergo standard polysomnography (PSG) and diagnosed with OSAS between January 2016 and January 2017. The data of the patients were retrieved from the records and retrospectively reviewed. Data including age and sex, height, weight, medical history, comorbidities, and drug use were recorded. All data related to the comorbidities including diabetes mellitus (DM), endocrinological disorders such as thyroid diseases, chronic respiratory conditions, and cardiovascular and neurological diseases were evaluated. The analysis results and prescriptions were also evaluated using the medical charts. The severity of OSAS was classified as mild, moderate, and severe based on the abnormal respiratory events as assessed by the respiratory disturbance index (RDI). There was no statistically significant relationship between the OSAS severity and the rate of cardiovascular diseases or hyperlipidemia. However, the incidence of DM increased, as the severity of OSAS increased. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is an important public health problem and our study results suggest that it plays a role both in the development and progression of many diseases. The presence of symptoms related to the systemic diseases commonly occurring in association with OSAS necessitates further clinical and laboratory investigation.
