The printing-shop run by the founder of printing in Deventer, Richard Pafraet, was taken over in 1511 in the same premises, his house “De Marienburg,” by his son Albert. Albert Pafraet is undoubtedly the most productive of the second generation of printers in Deventer. Together with his colleagues Jacob van Breda and Dirk van Borne he produced so many titles that Deventer’s productivity eclipsed that of other Dutch towns. It was only after 1515 that the production of books in Deventer began to decline. After 1517 Antwerp (with twice the number of independent printers) took the lead, certainly when Van Breda and Van Borne died in 1518 and 1519. |
