Popis: The concept of using heat pumps for industrial heat recovery has received much attention and several estimates suggest that total future markets for such systems are very large. This paper reviews the systems currently in place in the U.K. and examines the investment economics of proposed systems using a simple computer model. Actual cost and price data for available systems are used, together with sensitivity analysis, to examine their viability under a variety of assumptions. The results suggest that heat pump heat recovery systems will only be viable under conditions of considerably higher real energy prices or reduced capital costs and very high utilisations. Thus the market for industrial heat recovery heat pump systems in the U.K. are much more limited than has been estimated previously.
