Popis: 1. 1. Plasma potassium and sodium concentrations in active and hibernating ground squirrels were determined using heart puncture and flame photometry. 2. 2. Animals in hibernation with a body temperature of 5°C have a significantly lower plasma potassium concentration than active animals, but the plasma sodium is statistically the same in both physiological states. 3. 3. The adaptive value of such a mechanism is speculated upon. 4. 4. Conflicting evidence from the literature on these physiological phenomena is reviewed, and the possible reasons for the conflicts are discussed.
