Popis: A copolymer of allyl alcohol and styrene has been crosslinked in solution by reaction with diacid chlorides. The reaction rate is first order in acid chloride but of complex order in hydroxyl. Measurements are reported of the extent of reaction at gelation and of gel time as a function of concentration and of the size of the crosslinker. The fraction of crosslinks formed intramolecularly is calculated: the value of this fraction depends strongly on dilution and, to a lesser extent, on the length of the crosslinker chain. The swelling and compressional modulus of gels prepared in solution (preswollen networks) depend on dilution and crosslinker size in the same general manner as does the fraction of intramolecular links.
