Popis: If community livability is defined as a safe, engaging and healthy environment that allows us to carry out our daily activities, then senior citizens are shortchanged in most American communities. Our land use patterns and transportation systems have granted priority to the automobile. The real estate market has responded to the expectations of healthy adults with large houses, garages, and yards. The result is an environment that fails to offer viable transportation alternatives when an older person’s health is such that driving is no longer feasible. A lack of sidewalks and comfortable places to sit and rest can limit physical activity to the detriment of overall health. And the housing stock is dominated by the single family house that is too large, costly and at times dangerous for an older person.
