Sugar accumulation was examined in three species of lichen mycobionts cultured on osmotic media. Large quantities of glucose, fructose, mannitol, and arabitol were detected in all mycobionts cultured on media with high concentrations ofsucrose. However, fructose was not detected in mycobionts grown on media with glucose instead of sucrose. The quantities of accumulated monosaccharides in mycobionts increased parallel to the quantity of sugar added to the medium, though there were no differences in concentrations of polyols among mycobionts grown on media with various quantities of sucrose. In a previous paper (Hamada 1993) the effects of osmotic pressure on the growth of mycobiont col- onies and the chemical substances produced were studied. At least some species of lichen mycobionts are considered to be osmophilic, and their growth rates are higher on media with 10 or 20% sucrose than on conventional media. |
