In IPML Bentham presents a causal theory of action. In Chapter VII he begins his account of it in the middle of the causal sequence, with the nature of an action. Some of the important distinctions about actions he makes are explained. Human actions are distinct from physical actions. Bentham implies that a human action performed by a given person is causally initiated by an intention of hers. He also discusses an act’s production of consequences, considering this at an abstract level. The causal concepts he uses are explained, as well as how these would be incorporated into a penal code. |
