Static strain aging experiments were performed on a Au(4.S% Cu) solid solution as a function of strain, with the purpose to discriminate between two models recently proposed in the literature. The results decide in favour of the ‘dislocation-solute interaction’ model, which ascribes the effects of aging to an increase of the friction stress due to vacancy assisted solute diffusion to resting dislocations. The vacancies are produced by plastic deformation, and from the static aging data it follows for the vacancy production exponent mv = 2.05 ± 0.1. This value was confirmed by an independent alternative determination. From a re-evaluation of dynamic strain aging data a value for the strain exponent of the mobile dislocation density was obtained: β = 0.55 ± 0.2. At higher strains deviations of the strain dependence of static strain aging from the predictions of the model are observed. It is shown that this can be semi-quantitatively explained by the annealing out of vacancies during the straining and aging experiments. |
