Popis: | This article reviews the current information regarding the neurological and psychological correlates of religious and spiritual experiences. Such experiences appear to involve a number of different brain structures including the frontal and parietal lobes, the limbic structures, and the hypothalamus. In addition, neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and glutamate may also help mediate such phenomena. The result appears to be a complex set of neural pathways that are activated in different ways, depending on the particular experience. Issues and implications for future investigations are also considered. |
