The present communication deals with the chromosomal study of an Indian wild bird, Megalaima zeylanica caniceps (Capitonidae, Piciformes : Aves). In the testicular tissue, diakinetic cells showed two large bivalents. The largest bivalent showing as many as four chiasmata corresponded to the chromosome-4. The second largest bivalent, that comprised two or three chiasmata, was considered to be representing the sex-bivalent. No heteropycnotic mass was traceable as autosomes were then as much condensed as sex-chromosomes. |
