Popis: According to Wallace and Etkin (2018), goal specificity (specific or non-specific targets) changes the reference points used to assess goal progress which can impact goal motivation. For non-specific goals (goals in which the pursuer is trying to achieve as much as progress as possible with no defined achievement point), the goal reference point for progress is the beginning of the goal, and goal motivation is highest with progress near the beginning of the goal; for specific goals (goals with a defined achievement point), the goal reference point for progress is the end of the goal, and goal motivation is highest with progress near the end of the goal. This study will replicate study 2 in their paper, in which willingness to pay for a dinner (and forego savings toward debt repayment) is measured for hypothetical scenarios of different amounts of goal progress and goal specificity. We will investigate if the pattern holds for savings for emergencies as well. We will be looking at more levels of endowed progress for both the specific and non-specific scenarios to find a tipping point in goal motivation, the progress amount at which motivation is similar for both specific and non-specific goal scenarios. We will also look at how goal progress changes willingness to use money designated for emergencies when emergencies occur.
