Popis: | A case study of a patient who developed jaundice while taking oral contraceptives (OCs) is presented. The 18-year-old patient developed pruritus and mild jaundice within 1 month after beginning OC use. After a pregnancy in which jaundice did not develop she again showed these symptoms after resuming OC treatment with Ortho-Novum 1 (norethindrone 2 mg .05 mg mestranol). Histological examination of the liver revealed a marked degree of centrolobular cholestasis though there were no inflammatory changes in the liver parenchyma or portal tracts. Women who experience OC-induced jaundice generally have had pruritus or idiopathic jaundice during a previous pregnancy. |
