Popis: How do we know if animals can think? In extension of the previous debate on human-animal relations, this book analyzes the conditions and contexts of the scientific acquisition of our knowledge of animals. The current discussions within animal philosophy revolve around the three central questions of whether we can attribute a mind to animals, what the difference between humans and animals is, and how humans should behave towards animals. Our knowledge about animals is mostly taken from empirical research. However, the methods, theories, and contexts of empirical research have not yet been addressed. The book aims to fill this gap with the central concept of methodological signatures, which allows the systematic comparison of research approaches based on their fundamental methodological, ontological, and epistemological assumptions.
