In the summer of 1958 I bought a book by Professor Hasek entitled Vegetative Hybridization in Animals at the bookstore of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Wenceslaus Square. Retrospectively, the book was a witness of the bizarre intellectual climate in our country in the 1950s. In the fall of 1962, as a medical student, I met Professor Hasek in person for the first time and became interested in doing research at his institute. Following graduation from the School of Medicine, I jointed the institute and came to know Professor Hasek better, particularly in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I remember him fondly as a man of great intellect, intellectual curiosity, and scientific creativity. |
