Cellular swelling, due principally to the influx of sodium and water, has long been recognized as a cause of tissue injury during prolonged storage of transplantable kidneys [1]. Reliable storage for up to 48 h was made possible through the use of hyperosmotic solutions with intracellular electrolyte composition and glucose (EuroCollins solution). Improved function in the early postoperative period appears to have been achieved by incorporating osmotic agents that are more effective cellular impermeants (Belzer’s solution). |
