Popis: Two refractometric methods, viz. a ‘method of solute excess’ and one based on the method of continuous variations, have been used to measure the equilibrium constant and the heat, free energy, and entropy of hydrogen bonding of pairs of solutes in non-aqueous and in aqueous solutions. The results agree with published data obtained, e.g., by infrared spectroscopy. Thus, heats of reaction between —2.4 and —3.4 kcal/mol. are obtained for phenol-chlorobenzene bonding and ca—6 kcal/mol. for phenol-amide bonds in non-aqueous or aqueous media. Values appear higher in an aqueous than in a non-polar solvent. Other systems examined were phenol-n-butanol, ethyl acetate-chlorobenzene, and phenol-acetonitrile.
