Popis: A new approach is suggested to the design of multi-channel systems for biomagnetic applications, based on a combination of several autonomous small-size measuring modules within one system. Small-diameter second- order gradiometers have been developed for practical realization of the new design; the gradiometers are based on integrated dc-SQUIDs and have an intrinsic noise level of \(5 \cdot {10^{ - 15{\kern 1pt} }}T/\sqrt {Hz} \). Small-size 1.3 liter fiberglass helium dewars have been designed; the operating period of such dewars is more than two days. Tests have been carried out on a 3-channel version of the modular system. Ways are suggested for future development of modular multi-channel measuring system.
