Popis: The number of ultrasonograms performed by practitioners is increasing, thus necessitating a standardization of imaging techniques and preparation of permanent documentable images. Standardization will facilitate communication among practitioners and reduce mistakes in interpretation. The following proposal is limited to imaging techniques of the soft tissues in the region of the metacarpus and metatarsus. Future proposals will be presented regarding other imaging procedures. The internal anatomy of the palmar metacarpal/metatarsal soft tissue can be visualiT~l with a sonogram.1 There are several indications for the use of diagnostic ultrasound on the metacarpal/metatarsal region of the horse. Assess the existence of tendinitis: It is not always evident upon external examination of a possible bow if the tendon itself has been damaged. This situation may arise 1) upon presentation of a new equine case with no history, 2) where there is a discrepancy between signs and clinical history, and 3) there has been external trauma to the tendon area and slight to severe swelling is evidenL Assess the m o u n t of damage to the tendons: Detection of the amount of structural change is important because not all bows have comparable pathology, even though they may look and feel the same from the outside. The clinician shouM use a tendon classification scheme based on structural changes. 't Determination of therapy: Tendon injuries are a devastating problem for the race horse and have a low success rate of recovery. There is no one treatment that is best for all tendons. The degree and location of injury will determine the best form of therapy. Assess progress of healing: Once a course of thera
