Specific heat for ionic tunneling in a metallic environment

Popis: | Instituto de Fi´sica de Sa ˜o Carlos, Caixa Postal 369, 13560-250 Sao Carlos, SP, Brazil~Received 11 November 1999!We diagonalize the Hamiltonian proposed by Kondo to describe a heavy-ion tunneling between two sites ina Fermionic bath, using the numerical renormalization group procedure. The temperature-dependent specificheat, determined from the spectrum, shows a peak close to the effective tunneling rate. At low temperature wefound Fermi liquid behavior indicating the gap suppression due to low-lying excitations of the conductionband. The entire specific-heat curve depends only on a certain characteristic combination of the Coulombpotential and spatial separation of the sites.I. INTRODUCTION |
