Popis: The study is based on the Control-Value Theory of Achievement Emotions (Pekrun, 2006). The aim is to replicate relationships between cognitive appraisals (control and value) and discrete emotions, with special focus on different types of value appraisals and their influence on perceived arousal. Especially for positive and negative value, theoretical considerations have been discussed in the literature (Pekrun & Perry, 2014), but were rarely tested empirically (e.g., for a differentiation between extrinsic and intrinsic values, see Goetz et al., 2020). Using an experience sampling approach in order to assess state emotions and cognitive appraisals of learning situations, the planned study aims to test relationships between control- and value-appraisals (value components: intrinsic-positive, intrinsic-negative, extrinsic-positive and extrinsic-negative, opportunity cost) on the one hand, and valence, arousal, and the intensity of emotions (enthusiasm, anger, anxiety, boredom, and relaxation) on the other hand. The target population are university students who participate in in-person and online university courses and individual learning situations. We will use experience sampling method for data collection, using a newly developed smartphone app. That means, students are asked to activate the app in learning situations and will then randomly be prompted to fill in a short questionnaire (approximately two minutes). Each student will participate for two weeks. The results of the planned study contribute to a deeper understanding of the connections between cognitive appraisals and academic emotions.
