Popis: This chapter discusses assessment of the family and its relationship to other social systems. It presents assumptions about how the family functions as a social system, as a set of reciprocal roles, and as a developmental unit. The chapter discusses the assumptions of systems theory and describes their use in the functional-age model to assess the family. Holistic thinking can provide the practitioner with an understanding of family interactional processes. One of the first tasks of the family-centered social worker is the delineation of family boundaries. The importance of belonging is evident when people look at the nature of family membership. A genogram is a tool for depicting the genealogical inner workings of the family, and serves as an intergenerational map. As family members interact, each member is socialized to the particular mores and emotional tone operating within that family system. The mores and emotional tone provide the family's cultural and organizational fiber, varying from family to family.
