Popis: | Trim Castle in County Meath is one of the finest in Ireland, the largest in area and one of the most imposing in its remains. It has suffered the academic fate of not being the subject of a full-scale survey and description, but still being frequently referred to in various scattered sources. This article is not an attempt at the first of these, but tries to gather together the main lines of evidence into a preliminary analysis of the castle during the first seventy-five years of its existence. These lines of evidence consist of the existing standing remains, documentary references of various types, and the results of excavations carried out in the 1970s. Of these lines, it is the standing fabric which forms the core of this article, considering it as it was built and ignoring the later uses and modifications of it as far as possible; in fact there is little evidence of rebuilding as opposed to destruction. |
