Popis: Protozoan pathogens are major contributors to illness and death globally. Much of their impact can be controlled by a few drugs that are available. The resistance of these organisms to the existing drugs has threatened the treatment options. Therefore, many efforts are taken worldwide to develop drugs targeting novel pathways of protozoans. In the recent past, carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC4.2.1.1) of the pathogenic protozoans have emerged as novel targets for developing antiprotozoal agents. Several inhibitors belonging to sulfonamide, thiol, and hydroxamate groups have been found to inhibit protozoan CAs in vitro effectively. Some of the inhibitors have also shown good efficacy in inactivating the growth of protozoan parasites in vivo. Because of the limited treatment options that are available for protozoan diseases, novel drugs are urgently needed. Inhibitors against protozoan CAs present a novel strategy to effectively treat these diseases.
