Evidence is strong for the existence of the skin barrier in the stratum corneum. This layer resists the action of many chemical substances, preventing their entry into skin and controlling the loss of body water through skin. However, it is vulnerable to certain solvents and organic amines as reflected in sharp increases in skin permeability. Solvents with such an effect are those with both polar and lipophilic properties. Apparently, they have the effect not only of removing skin lipids, but also of breaking down the complex structure of the barrier, thus making it defective and possibly subject to entry by other chemical agents which do not penetrate intact skin. Here then is an important area of skin research that needs further study. |
