Hydrazoic acid HN 3 molecularly adsorbed on NaCl(100) has been studied for the first time using polarization Fourier transform infrared surface spectroscopy (PIRSS) and LEED. The NaCl surface has been prepared by cleaving a single crystal in situ under UHV. Island growth up to a defined saturation coverage was observed. The strong polarization dependence of the sharp absorption multiplet of the asymmetric NNN stretching vibration (v 2 ) and the p(2 X 2) superstructure indicate a highly ordered adsorption phase. Isotopic mixture experiments reveal two groups of energetically equivalent HN 3 species within the adsorbate unit cell which contains four molecules. The orientation of both HN 3 species was determined and a zig-zag-chain-like arrangement of hydrogen bonded HN 3 dimers was inferred. The isosteric activation energy of desorption was estimated to be 43 ± 5 kJ mol -1 . The first results on the UV-induced surface reaction to ammonium azide NH 4 N 3 are reported. |
